Pham Thi Han is a true discovery as the spirited Thuy, and Gauger directs the young star with an assured, understated hand in this romantic tale of love and loneliness.

Cast: Artika Sari Devi, Martinus Miroto, Eko Supriyanto, Jecko Siompo Pui, Retno Maruti

Garin Nugroho adapts an episode from the seminal Ramayana epic for his provocative foray into a brand of cross-cultural and multiform cinema which encompasses Mozart's Requiem, gamelan music, sacred court dance and modern conceptual art installations. The story concerns a pair of former dancers (Artika Sari Devi and Miroto), now pottery makers in a fraying marriage, and the rich village bully (UCLA alumnus Eko Supriyanto) who comes between them. The style is an astonishing mélange of influences gracefully entwined to fashion a moving elegy for victims of tyranny and violence.

The foremost Thai creator of mysterious cinematic objects, Apichatpong Weerasethakul derives his latest magical concoction from the lives his own parents led before they became lovers. The characteristically bifurcated narrative first follows a young female doctor in an idyllic rural hospital before switching focus to a young man working at an alienating modern urban medical facility. This supremely ethereal film, replete with patiently gorgeous sequence shots and unforced poetic echoes, eschews facile linearity in favor of the uncanny logic of memory and dream.

Cinematographer: Chan Hai Liang
Editor: Kok Kai Foong
Cast: Berg Lee, Chung Kok Keong, Ng Meng Hui, Cheong Wai Loon

Part of an ongoing wave of new films from Malaysia, Woo Ming Jin’s second feature is an energizing blend of fable and kitchen-sink reality. The fish in the waters surrounding a small village have turned toxic and the locals seem to have fallen victim to some mysterious malady, too. Against this backdrop of muted malaise, two men — one younger and one older, both adrift — attempt to adapt to the changing landscape. By turns contemplatively introspective and charmingly funny, The Elephant and the Sea is quite a catch.

The Dynamite Warrior is a hero to the farmers and villagers of the Thai countryside — not just for his mighty martial art skills, but because he flies into battle standing atop a bamboo rocket, like it was a jet-propelled surfboard. This sequel to last year's event will feature brand-new performance and spoken word with discussion to follow the show. The event will feature Kirk Read, Seth Eisen, Nico Dacumos, Wickie Stamps, Thandiwe Thomas and more TBA. According to organizers, as back rooms are shut down to make way for wedding vows, and gay sexual culture becomes little more than straight-acting dudes hangin' out, where are the possibilities for a defiant faggotry that destroys the assimilationist norms of a world that wants us dead? It's time for flaming challenges to masculinity, objectification and the desire to conform.
