"Where We Stand"

Ang Ating Hangarin - Ang Ating Natamo

LOS ANGELES, California (March 27, 2008) On Saturday, April 5, 2008, the Loyola Marymount University (LMU) campus will host the 2008 SoCal Filipino/a American Studies & Student Conference. The all day (9am-5pm) conference brings together Fil-Am faculty and students to discuss the current state of classes at local campuses and the strategies of student and community support needed to stabilize and expand them. The morning session invites local faculty to report and voice challenges they face on their respective campuses. Following a catered Pilipino lunch break including entertainment, the afternoon session calls for a dialogue of current students and alumni to exchange concrete support strategies. The conference has adopted the theme of "Where We Stand". (The Pilpino translation of "Ang Ating Hangarin - Ang Ating Natamo" more literally means "This is what we struggled for - This is where we are".) The conference invites full community participation.

The day's conference agenda will open with a rare special screening of "A Filipino In America", the 1938 USC Masters in Cinematography project of the late Doroteo B. Ines. This film is perhaps one of the very first Filipino American produced films to expose the real life of our early immigrants. The silent film was restored in a joint project between USC and the Filipino American Library. In addition a keynote address by Jean-Paul deGuzman, a recent graduate of the UCLA Asian American Studies MA Program and who is currently enrolled in the UCLA PhD program in History will open the afternoon student / alumni dialogue session. Community information tables will also be available during the lunch period.
<>All sessions will be held at LMU's Seaver Hall 100 and registration will open at 8:30am. Pre-registration is just $5 and includes lunch. The cost of registration at the door is $9 and lunch is not guaranteed. Parking at LMU is FREE. For campus directions see the following map link: http://www.lmu.edu/page69.aspx
